“To a Friend on HIs 18th Birthday” By Johnny Kung

By Johnny Kung ’23

To the artistic, smile-giving Muse,

whose heart’s so warming, like the Sun, it shines,

with charming image and sweetness like dews,

you are the child of greatness, how refined!

“A bird in a cage,” as some John may say,

Your feathers tattered by a love most stern.

But you stood strong with grace and proud display,

your earnest self, with kindness that all yearns.

Though all the sonnets I with sadness sung,

You turned them into a duet of cheers.

No words more honest ring forth from my tongue

than these thanks to you that I wrote here.

Today be Jolly! Your coming of age —

I wish you the best, in your life’s new page.
