“Pay Attention” by Lidia Martinez-Castro

See the way the light shines on the grass
See the way the water ripples on its surface
See the way the trees breathe

Hear the way the birds chirp in the morning
Hear the way the leaves sway in the wind
Hear the shuffle of the bed as you wake up

Smell the flowers
Smell the coffee
Smell the fresh outdoors

But,

You must also see the hostility people face
You must hear the gunshots
You must smell the bloodshed
